Subject: ni de peng you

For those of you keeping track, Emily baked a cake and polished two pair of shoes, Elnora paid her bills and Mark worked straight from 8 in the morning till 11 at night on the AASK video without eating--will someone in the neighborhood please send the guy a pizza? (I wonder if I could e-mail Cybelle's from here...?)

School is now in full swing; we're doing two lessons a day, so it's really flying. Scary, too, since the Japanese can move so much faster than we can. But now I have a language partner who really doesn't seem to mind helping me repeat over and over again... ni hao ma hen hao ni hao ma hen hao and she swears I'm actually saying something meaningful. In return, we have an English conversation. She's from a province two hours away and has offered to take me there. I hope to take her up on that offer.

I think my dorm must have cable. How else do you explain that I got to see not only Murder, She Wrote, but also the X-Files? Yes, in English; it's a Hong Kong channel. But, best of all, roomie and I found a Jackie Chan movie with Chinese and English subtitles and we curled up over pots of hot tea and coffee (tea for me, coffee for her) and did our homework and watched Jackie Chan. We bonded. She doesn't think he's cute. Maybe his hair isn't maroon enough for her.

All my American friends like my roommate, but none of them know enough Chinese to do anything about it.

Gotta go study. Keep those cards and letters coming.

Oh, can anyone tell me when the Oscars are? I'd like to invite all my international friends to watch them with me in my room. (I'm really one of the only Americans around.)

Zai jian!

Debra.
